Top Rug Cleaning Methods

Oriental and Persian rugs are aesthetic interior products that hold much value due to their elegant appearance and traditional hand-weaving techniques. Artisans create these products since ancient times while providing different sizes for different decorative purposes. They are famous for their unique patterns and motifs and contain expensive materials such as natural silk and wool. Many factors affect the quality of the product, and one of them is the rug cleaning methods that many companies recommend by their experience.

Rug Cleaning Methods

They are many types of authentic oriental rugs that can be very pricy. Thus, they need special cleaning procedures to maintain their value and beauty. While people are spoilt for choices when selecting rug cleaning methods and companies for the service, they need to understand the details and the differences between cleaning systems. Every type of Persian rug may require a particular cleaning procedure. However, they are some defined methods that can be useful for most Persian carpets. If the product is not maintained appropriately, it may need a professional repair process. Here are some of the standard methods used for cleaning carpets, kilims, and rugs.

Hot Water Extraction Rug Cleaning Method

This rug cleaning method is commonly known as steam cleaning. This system uses high-pressure hot water to arouse the fibre in the product’s structure and dissolve the piles’ dirt.

Hot water extraction cleaning generally involves cleaning agent action on the dirty surface, agitation of the product with a brush and rinsing at the end of the process. After the cleaning agent’s settlement for a short duration, the rug should be washed with special carpet cleaning equipment. Rinsing must be done thoroughly, and then the product will be left to dry in air-conditioned or at room temperature.

The average-sized carpet would typically require 2 hours of cleaning and at least 4 hours of the drying process. It is efficient to do the cleaning in the late afternoon to dry overnight after the cleaning.

Rug Shampooing Cleaning Method

The shampoo rug cleaning method was popular and trendy until introducing encapsulation technology which goes back to the 1970s. This method may seem to clean heavily soiled rugs. However, due to its disadvantages, it has become less popular over time. The most crucial disadvantage of this method is that the shampoo leaves behind a high amount of wet foam residues in the product that will take a long time to dry. Even after drying, it becomes very sticky due to the absence of complete rinsing and rapid re-soiling on the rug.

The rug shampooing method is available in two types which are cylindrical and rotary. The cylindrical process uses a machine with an air compressor that can whip the cleaning solution, and the foam is brushed into the product with a cylindrical tool. After drying the rug, it should be vacuumed to be free of the shampoo and the particles bonded to it. The only advantage that this system has is its fast pace process. However, people who choose to utilize this type of cleaning must be aware that they should frequently use it as it is more of a surface cleaning. In the rotary method, chemicals similar to those used with cylindrical are used. The rotary machine is usually attached to a tank that contains the solution substance. The shampoo is fed trough a tub to a shower feed, which is applied to the rug. Then the scrubbing brushes that are installed to the machine start the cleaning process. The rotary system is not recommended due to the probability of the untwisting of the face piles.

Encapsulation Method

The encapsulation system utilizes synthetic detergents as a cleaning base that will crystalize into powder form after drying. The loosened dirt particles in the oriental rug’s fiber will be encapsulated into powder after the foam is dried thoroughly. After this, the dirt can be easily vacuumed or brushed.

The encapsulation rug cleaning method has overtaken shampooing technology. This system uses less water during the cleaning procedure, and the drying time is much shorter than the shampooing method. This method is appreciated by those who uphold using environmentally friendly products due to the lower amount of chemical residue left behind after cleaning. There is only one drawback to this method: the lack of thoroughly cleaning the heavy soiling rugs due to the technology’s limitation.

Bonnet Cleaning

This carpet cleaning method has become very popular due to its good surface cleaning results. The Bonnet method mainly involves cleaning the top part of the product fiber using a heavy-duty machine. The motorized engine, which contains a spinning pad that has been engaged with a cleaning solution, absorbs the dirt from the rug’s surface.

Bonnet cleaning is the best solution for rugs exposed to high traffic and can provide a quick cleaning process. Additionally, this system does not come with much moisture. Thus, the carpet which is cleaned with this system can dry very quickly. There is one issue with this system: the presence of the dirt beneath the product that will emerge back to the surface within a short period. The soil will cause the carpet to get soiled again, and it will need a re-cleaning process.

Dry Rug Cleaning Method

The dry cleaning method, also known as compound cleaning, is one of the newest technologies found in the market. It has increasingly gained popularity and approvals by many manufacturers due to its effective performance. One of the advantages of this method is that it does not require drying time. This method’s highlight is the application of cleaning powder or compound into the bottom section of the rug using a motorized rotating brush machine. The machine can open the fiber and allow the solution to settle inside the pile, resulting in the product’s thorough deep cleaning. The compound used in this method is generally made of biodegradable material, which works like micro-sponges. Thus, it can effectively absorb dissolved dirt.

The dry rug cleaning method is invented in the 1980s. Thus there are many types of cleaning powders or compounds available in the market. As this method is relatively new compared to other cleaning methods used for decades, many still doubt the effectiveness of this technology’s effectivity.
